Goa is India's smallest state by area and the fourth smallest by population, but probably its best known as a beach holiday destination. It sits on the West coast of India on the Arabian Ocean and has 450 years of history as a Portuguese territory. This makes it much more than a place to snooze under a palm tree, with a rich and varied architecture. Inland the mountains of the Western Ghats with their tea plantation and wildlife sanctuaries make it a little-known paradise for those in search of a beautiful landscape, exotic birds and animals and a break from the party life of the coast!
Goa has some of the finest beaches in the World. There are excellent resorts of all classes, from simple homestays to 5 star resorts. North Goa has a long 10 km stretch of outstanding beach, stretching along from Aguada Fort, Candolim, and Anjuna, to Chapura Fort. South Goa has several newer developments having swimming pools, extensive grounds with restaurants and gardens, leading to beautiful long clean beaches.
Goa was the capital of the Portugese Eastern Empire for 400 years, and it retains many influences on its culture and heritage. These include many fine white churches, old forts, cathedrals, and houses. The centre of Old Goa is dominated by the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Sé Cathedral. The Basilica is a World Heritage Site, with gilded altars, elaborate pulpit, and twisted columns. It is most famous for the remains of St Francis Xavier.
